Goodbye 2016!

img_53542016 has been a big year for so many people. For a lot it seems to be a year of change and has brought some big challenges. But the beauty of challenges is the potential for growth. After much reflection, I have had a pretty fantastic year despite -and as a result of -those challenges; and I am so so excited for 2017! A big thank you to all my family and friends who have been my support and my light and if you want to relive my year with me a little have a read through my summary below!

The dreaded “F” Word

It’s been a while since I’ve posted – you are probably wondering where I have gone! Well I’m still here. Still fighting the fight as we all do. But fighting is not the word I am referring to. Today I want to talk about something that holds us all back – the dread of not being good enough. The fear of “Failure”. Dun dun daaaaaahhhh! And that’s different to the fear of being just plain old bad. It’s being less than you want to be, and the unimportant but ominous “less than what other’s expect you to be” or “less than you want others to think of you”.

And if you are wanting to do something similar what should you expect? Here’s some of what I picked up on my journey which might help you out along the way!

Intervals part 2: The flip side of intervals

A while ago I did a post on musical theatre songs that relate to intervals in music: Some little memory tricks to make reading and singing intervals easier. Just incase you missed it, here’s part 1 again if you want a refresher: Reading and Recognising Intervals

So I take it you have learnt all of those!!! – But I’ve had some questions about finding the descending version of each interval. And in honesty, they can be much more difficult to wrap your head around than going up. So I’ve made a part 2 for you all!!! The flip side of intervals. A song doesn’t just go up and up and up (…  except at the end of Phantom of the Opera right sopranos?….) so it’s important to know your intervals going back the other way. Ready to give it a try? Let’s get started.

Well [let’s start] at the very beginning shall we? A unison being the same way backwards and forwards, why not use this example from Sound of Music‘s “Do-Re-Mi.” (Even though I know you don’t really need one)

Keeping Audition Ready

So sometimes we have heaps of time to prepare for an audition. Sometimes we hear about it a week in advance – if that! That can make our time to prepare very very small. Is there a way we can make ourselves more ready for a quick work up of a song? I think so. Here are some ideas that might work for you.

Expanding Your Repertoire

There’s nothing worse than looking through your repertoire and realising you don’t have anything you need. Like those days you just have nothing to wear right? You want to have a great repertoire available to you for auditions and performances but you just don’t know where to start. There are so many options out there and so much you can work through – its a matter of knowing where to look. Here are some good places to look for new songs.

Practice Techniques To Bust the Nerves

There really is truth to the saying don’t practise ’til you get it right, practise ’til you can’t get it wrong. When it comes to practising a piece you are performing or even auditioning (which lets face it – is sometimes more scary than a performance) it’s really important to have your work down. Here are some of my tricks for being ready.

Finding the story

When you are trying to get your song ready for a performance or audition it is really important that you find the story that you are wanting to tell. Sometimes that is laid out for you and sometimes it takes a little more work. Here are some steps that will help you if you are a little lost. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is find your story once your song is taken out of context. So lets say you are singing in a cabaret (or audition room) a song that is no longer in context of its show and see how we might find it.
